Drumming anchors the ensemble's performance repertoire. The ensemble performs original works composed by its members as well as traditional pieces. Although the ensemble has a large collection of percussion instruments, the members perform primarily on the Janggo (hourglass drum), the Buk (barrel drum), the Kkwaenggwari (hand gong), and the Jing (large gong).
The ribbon-hat dance is difficult to capture in words, and these photos only hint at the artistry, technique, and spirit of this dance. The members perform two types of ribbon hats: the Sangmo and the even longer Yoldubal whose streamer can be as long as 30 feet.
The ensemble has had the privilege of collaborating with many talented musicians and artists, creating new and innovative works, and mounting unique productions. Here is just a sample of the Ensemble Jeng Yi's collaborations and special projects.
